It may be that when the angels go about their task praising God, they play only Bach. I am sure, however, that when they are together en famille they play Mozart.
Karl Barth
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra in E flat Major, K. 364 performed by Janine Jansen and Amihai Grosz with Gábor Takács-Nagy leading the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra.
Mozart penned his sublime Sinfonia concertante for violin and viola in 1779 aged 23, when still in the stifling service of the Archbishop Colloredo of Salzburg, but also buzzing from the artistic inspiration received on a recent tour to Paris and Mannheim. Owing much of its wonderful colouring to the unusual decision to make a viola – an instrument Mozart loved playing himself – the violin’s entirely equal partner, it opens with an Allegro maestoso abounding in different melodic ideas, moves to a heartrendingly expressive Andante, and concludes with a joyous Rondo.
Listening to this in the Salles des Combins here at the Verbier Festival was the perfect way to end the day here in the Swiss Alps. I'm no angel but for a brief moment I felt like I was being lifted up to the Heavens.

Janáček composed his piano music around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, before he found fame late in life with operas such as ‘Jenůfa’, ‘Káťa Kabanová’ and ‘The Makropulos Case’. Epigrammatic but obsessive, these intimate pieces speak of the composer’s passions and frustrations. But like his later works they are loaded with drama and big ideas.
The first book in ‘On An Overgrown Path’ is notable for its poetic titles – such as ‘Our evenings’, ‘They chattered like swallows’, ‘Unutterable anguish’ – which find expression in music of apparent folk-like innocence and sudden passions, which reach a powerful climax in the violent contrasts of the first book’s final piece, ‘The Barn-Owl has not flown away’. This is music of heartbreak and desolation hardly less moving in its way than the great scenes of love and abandonment which Janáček composed for his operatic heroines.
Stripped of such titles, the second book in ‘On An Overgrown Path’ is more elusive in meaning, swinging between a gentle, Czech translation of Debussy’s Impressionist tone-painting and darker, more sinister currents of expression that run raw and angry in the Sonata which Janáček wrote to commemorate the death of a young man at the hands of the police in Prague during political protests in the autumn of 1905. From seven years later, the four-movement cycle of Mists recovers some of the Romantic melancholy of ‘On an Overgrown Path’, though its cathartic finale presents a stiff challenge to any pianist with its torrents of notes.
As the recipient of a prestigious Borletti-Buitoni award, the Hungarian pianist Zoltán Fejérvári is a solo, concerto and chamber-music pianist with several well-received recordings to his credit such as Liszt’s Malédiction and an album of Mozart violin sonatas in partnership with Ernő Kállai.
This new recording contains the main body of piano music by Czech composer Leos Janáček: the Piano Sonata, the complete cycle On an Overgrown Path and the cycle In The Mists. Janáček’s piano music is highly personal, his language immediately recognizable: short, almost aphoristic motives form the basis of a highly dramatic discourse. The Sonata was written after the death of a man during a worker’s demonstration and expresses a deep and bleak despair. The cycle In The Mists and On An Overgrown Path contain miniatures of sometimes violent, sometimes painfully intimate emotions.
Zoltán Fejérvári is one of the most exciting young pianists to emerge from present day Hungary. A recipient of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship and 1rst prize winner of the Montréal Piano Competition he played with the Budapest Festival Orchestra/Iván Fischer, with Zoltán Kocsis, at the Verbier Festival, Washington Library of Congress, Carnegie Weill Hall and many international Music Festivals. He is a member of the “Building Bridges” program of Sir András Schiff.

Without craftsmanship, inspiration is a mere reed shaken in the wind.
Johannes Brahms
In 1878, Johannes Brahms took a well-deserved vacation after the successful premiere of two of his symphonies. It was during this time in the charming town of Pörtschach am Wörthersee that he began composing his Violin Concerto in D major, which he intended to dedicate to his friend, the violinist Joseph Joachim. However, there was a slight hurdle: while Brahms was an accomplished pianist, his mastery of the violin technique was much more limited.
Nevertheless Brahms composed the work and presented it to Joachim, who deemed certain passages unplayable and requested revisions. Brahms complied with the virtuoso's recommendations and also removed the fourth movement, which he later reused in his second piano concerto. The public warmly received Brahms' Violin Concerto, but its demanding nature made it challenging for it to gain widespread recognition among the great violin works, and some violinists even refused to perform it due to its difficulty. However, today, the piece is regarded as a cornerstone of the violin repertoire, thanks to its melodic richness. In addition to the complex and magnificent violin part, the orchestral introduction is breathtaking.
At this year’s Verbier Festival's 30th anniversary, it was a privilege and a joy to see three-time Grammy-winning American conductor Kent Nagano and Greek violin virtuoso Leonidas Kavakos together with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra perform a programme of captivating pieces including Brahms’ Violin Concerto, a monument of 19th-century European violin repertoire.

“TROIKA À LA RUSSE” PRESENTED BY CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH MUSIC, SATURDAY, MARCH 23, 2019, 6PM, MAHAIWE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
(Great Barrington, MA…) Ukrainian-born pianist Inna Faliks (“adventurous and passionate”— The New Yorker) and Yehuda Hanani present a program rich in Russian lore, Slavic emotionalism, Soviet-era sarcasm, and dazzling virtuosity: the cello/piano sonatas by Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, and Scriabin’s Sonata No. 5, which pianist Sviatoslav Richter considered the most difficult piece in the entire piano repertory. Rachmaninoff’s sonata is passionate and emotionally torrential, a survivor from the 19th century. Prokofiev, on the other hand, dubbed “bad boy of Russian music” by the establishment for his earlier avant-garde style, has written here a work that is mellow and reflective. Faliks will evoke Scriabin the mystic who believed he was the musical Messiah. It is music of ecstasy and visions. Faliks, who has appeared with Keith Lockhart, Leonard Slatkin and many of the world’s greatest orchestras, has been praised as a “high priestess of the piano, pianist of the highest order, as dramatic and subtle as a great stage actor.” The concert is a journey in Russian landscapes and into the Russian soul.
